All praise is due to Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

In the beginning of the Islamic year 1447, so again the blessed month of Muharram comes to visit us. Unique to the first month of the year, it is hallowed with deeper meaning, history, and emotion everywhere for Muslims across the world.

What Makes Muharram Special?
Muharram is unlike any other month among the twelve – for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ called it “Shahrullah” – the Month of Allah. It is one of the four sacred months over which war and conflict should be forbidden and from acts of worship and kindness great rewards are expected.

It is a time for reflection, spiritual renewal, and remembrance of the struggles of those gone by for many.

One of these days is the 10th of Muharram, that is known as Ashura. Now, this is not just another day in the calendar; it is extremely precious emotionally and historically.

The Day of Ashura – More Than Just History

One of the most important days in Muharram is the 10th, known as Ashura. Now, this isn’t just a day on the calendar—it holds emotional and historical weight.

Ashura marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, in the battle of Karbala. He stood firm in the face of injustice, choosing truth over comfort. His sacrifice reminds us to never remain silent in the face of tyranny, no matter how tough the road may be.

For Sunni Muslims, Ashura is also a day when Prophet Musa (AS) and his followers were saved from Pharaoh. The Prophet ﷺ fasted on this day and encouraged us to do the same, saying it expiates the sins of the previous year.

How Can We Honor Muharram in 2025?

In an age where life moves at lightning speed, it is very easy to get absorbed in the day-to-day aspects and overlook the deeper meanings behind Islamic events. Muharram is a golden chance to stop and reconnect with faith.

There are some things you should consider doing during this holy month:

Observe a fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram (or 10th and 11th), following the Sunnah.

Read and reflect on the story of Karbala – reflect on the message of truth and sacrifice.

Give charity, however little it may be, for small deeds carry a heavy weight in Allah’s eyes.

Make a lot of dua. It is a sacred time and an opportunity to ask Allah for guidance and mercy.

Stay away from arguments and bad behavior. This month is for peace and self-control.

Reminder for the Heart
Muharram is not just about mourning—it’s also about awakening. It’s the time to remind ourselves of the courage to bear things, the courage to defy, and the courage to fight for what is right, even if standing alone.

May we use Muharram 2025 to spiritually develop, shape character, and teach the next generation the meaning of genuine sacrifice.

May Allah guide us all, forgive our sins, and accept our efforts in this blessed month. Ameen.
